In part I of the volume you will find articles on political issues that are relevant to cultural affairs, such as copyright in Austria and its regulation at EU level; public funding of culture according to EU law; the legal and economic status of artists; protection of cultural assets at national, international and EU level; the status of authors in the fields of media and cultural industry and, finally, the EU media policy and the Austrian position.

In introductory analyses the editors present the position of the European Union and its political and cultural ambitions. The articles in part I provide an insight into the interfaces of culture and politics and show clearly what the discussion on culture is about: how a state and a supranational organization can make available a political framework to ensure the creative production of culture.
