   on the book

Whether it is Lawrence Weiner's installation on the anti-aircraft tower, VALIE EXPORT's walk with Peter Weibel on a dog leash, or Christoph Schlingensief's foreigners container in front of the State Opera House, “Wem gehört die Stadt?” provides an overview over infamous and provocative, poetic and political art in public spaces in Vienna.

The basis of this publication is a project collection covering more than 1000 projects, to which the österreichische kulturdokumentation has contributed. Using the classification by the österreichische kulturdokumentation 163 exemplary permanent and temporary art projects were selected and placed in a historical and art historical context by Thomas Edlinger.

But who does the city belong to now? What is public space? Who participates in it? The title of this book raises a question mark and opens an exciting discussion about the manifold aspects behind the concept of the public, and sharpens the view of this issue.

   online database

600 out of more than 1000 projects and works have been categorised chronologically as well as according to various criteria (artist, location, material, genre, theme). Thus it has been possible to track thematic significances, material and genre ascriptions and boom cycles over the decades – from the Kunst am Bau [art on buildings/architectural sculpture] of the 1960s to temporary interventions. With the project collection of the österreichische kulturdokumentation a digital collection is being initiated by KÖR that will serve and be developed as an open database for a comprehensive compilation of art in public space. The data collected will for the first time make it possible to undertake a digital exploration of art in public space in Vienna since 1968. You are invited to contribute your project together with all important information at www.koer.or.at. After editing and discussion with KÖR GmbH your project will be included in the index. A selection of 163 exemplary projects forms the basis for the publication „Wem gehört die Stadt? Wien – Kunst im öffentlichem Raum seit 1968– [Who does the city belong to? Vienna – art in public space since 1968].
